River Raider Jeep JK Tubular Fender Flares

Sep. 17, 2009 By Pete Bach
We upgraded our JK with River Raider's Tubular Flares.
River Raider Tubular Flares look great and have a tough GatorHyde to protect.

With some companies scrambling to save a buck here and skimp on quality there, it is nice to find a company in our own backyard, built not on profit margins, but on quality. River Raider Off-Road started from humble beginnings when a fellow

Jeep enthusiast went in search of aftermarket parts for his Jeep. Disappointed with parts that didn’t fit or hold up on the trail, Kenny Hauk began fabricating his own parts in his garage. After a few prototypes, the designs began to take form, and with the success of the Jeep JK platform, it was no surprise that River Raider was formed and focuses its design efforts on the newest Wrangler.

The Jeep JK’s wheel wells are caverns for even the largest tires to be swallowed into.  The problem lies in the hulking and hideous, plastic factory fender flares that hinder larger tires from full stuff. Immediately addressing this issue, River Raider’s first product to be largely applauded by the Jeep aftermarket and consumers was its excellent 1.5 DOM tubular, steel flares that are coated by a two-part, polyurethane-based coating, affectionately known as GatorHyde.

GatorHyde is extremely durable, washable with no staining and paintable to match any Jeep color. Hauk has also made sure to use a more fine texture than the traditional bed liner for a cleaner look with very little maintenance required.

River Raider offers both wide and narrow flares to compliment your setup.

The flares fit perfectly, install without a hitch and protect thin sheet metal where it’s most needed. They don’t look too bad either! Simply put, they just might be the best looking flares on the market today, and every JK owner has a choice in a wide or narrow flavor. For more coverage, a factory width flare is offered … and for the ultimate in trail visibility, a narrow version can be ordered, which is 2 1/4-inches narrower than factory. Though 38-inch tires are no problem for these flares, some minor trimming might be needed when moving up to 40s when trying to achieve maximum stuff!

We found that with a little trimming 40-inch tires stuff nicely.

River Raider's first entry into the Jeep market was actually its snorkel system, which was then followed by the company’s steel flares. Over the last several months, the new products seem to be coming at us faster than our jaws can hit the floor. An assortment of quality body armor, from Crusher Corners and bumpers to rocker skids and diff covers, all can now be had from the folks at River Raider.

Shown is another new product from River Raider in its Crusher Corners.

Sure, those are the typical products that many companies are offering today; however, Hauk had even more tricks and secrets up his sleeve that caught us all off guard.  Full chassis skid systems, aluminum half doors and River Raider's new, and highly sought after, Weld-in Cage Kit are just a few of the new offerings. After only a few short years in the business, Hauk has earned the reputation of having some of the most innovative and indestructible JK parts on the market.

One of our future needs is this Weld in Cage kit from River Raider.

We installed a set of the River Raider Tube Fenders on our hot, red two-door JK that is fitted with a Rock Krawler 3.5-inch X-Factor Long arm suspension and 40-inch Goodyear MTR tires. That’s right! Only 3.5 inches of lift and 40-inch tires are combined with the River Raider flares, and this is all that was needed to get the ultimate package.  The combination has worked well and looks fantastic.

Our River Raider narrow flares work and look great!

We’d recommend River Raider to any JK owner and are on the look out for new and innovative parts from Kenny Hauk. We look forward in trying out more products from a great new company that focuses on quality components and customer service – two things that are seemingly getting harder and harder to find these days.
