Teralow 4 to 1 conversion - Installed in a Jeep NP-231 T-Case

Nov. 01, 2005 By Tony Carricaburu

TERA LOW INSTALL STEP 5 (Mounting to Trans.):

After the assembly, it was time to raise the transfer case back under the Jeep. I suggest using a floor jack for this part but in my case I don't have a jack that'll lift high enough. That's just one disadvantage of having a 9" suspension lift. Since we didn't have a jack, my friend and I decided to just lift it up there. The case really isn't all that heavy, but I do suggest having two people to do this job. One to lift the t-case under the Jeep and hold in position and the other guy to quickly thread the mounting bolts in.

After the transfer case has been mated to the transmission, put the transmission in gear. Now it's time to install the front output yoke bolt. I chose to do this while it was mated against the transmission because the transmission will hold the output gear from moving thus allowing me to torque away on the front output yoke retaining bolt without having to struggle and hold it. Click on pictures to see more details, also note my Jeepin' buddy Nate torquing the front output yoke down.

FINAL RESULTS (ratio change):

Below I included a chart that I made showing the differences in the low range gear ratio change (differences)

Before: Jeep drivetrain gear ratio specifications: TF-999 (3-speed transmission)=1st. gear ratio: 2.74, NP-231 transfer case 4-low gear ratio: 2.72, and Front / Rear Axle gear ratio: 4.11
In order to calculate these specifications, use the following basic math procedure.

Multiply the following in order: 2.74 x 2.72 x 4.11 = Old Gear Ratio = 30.63

After: Tera Low Jeep drive gear ratio specifications: TF-999 (3-speed transmission)=1st. gear ratio: 2.74, NP-231 transfer case 4-low gear ratio: 4.1, and Front / Rear axle gear ratio: 4.11

Multiply the following in order: 2.74 x 4.1 x 4.11 = New Gear Ratio = 46.17
