Nicely done, and thanks for presenting the article! I realize this is an old article (2005), but I have a question on the Rustoleum curing time. This article mentions "We allowed the paint to dry for about 20-30 minutes between each coat." However, the Rustoleum paint (both the Professional and the "standard") says to not recoat until 24 or more hours. Two things. First, I wanted to verify that you actually meant recoat in 30 minutes? Second, do you and your dad believe I'd get better results by waiting 24 hours? Funny, my dad & I will be painting my car, and I just purchased a HF gravity feed gun for $10. Thanks for your time! -Mark http://www.marksatterfield.com

I just spray-painted a different kind of car with Rustoleum. The spray can says: "Apply a second coat or Clear coat **within 1 hour** or after 48 hours. Apply Clear in 2-3 light coats a few minutes apart."

A coat of paint usually consists of a tack coat, wait until it tacks, then a thicker covering coat, and possibly another coat, just waiting for the paint to tack a bit so it doesnt run. A recoat would be to let it dry, then sand it, then shoot it again (same technique, tack coat, full coat). On basecoat clear coat systems, you must shoot the clear within the time alloted (while tacky) or else you would have to let it dry then sand it. On multiple color coats, you might have to wait for each coat to dry, and sand any part that is shiny and will be getting new paint, like masked panels or flames or scallops. For basecoat clearcoat, there are specially designed clears that are used for "inter coats" where color is overlapping each other. So, in answer of the question about recoat and coat, No, do not wait 24 hours between your tack coat, and your final coat(s). But if you should mess up your final coat, and need to fix it, you will have to wait at least 24 hours for the paint to dry, then sand it (scuff off shiny surface only), and reapply the color coat.

I suspect they are possibly talking about some other paint? I have not heard of any paint that requires 24 hours between "coats" Not that I know all by any means! So yes, we waited 20 - 30 minutes between each coat. The second coat was a really "light" coat called the TACK coat, it looks dull, and gets very tacky quickly. Then you cover the last one and it is shiny. I hope this helps, I am still around www.ECORS.com is my latest project
