Reviewer's Notebook: JB Conversions Transfer Case Conversion Kit & Six States Distributors CV Joint Driveshaft
November 1, 2005

After installing almost five inches of lift on Project Trail J, I knew I was in for it if I did not address potential driveline vibrations. Rather than use the kit and driveshaft provided with my lift, I chose the new kit designed specifically for TJ's from JB Conversions.

I can't afford a V8 swap. Actually, in a few years, I will begin Phase II of Project Trail J, which will include axle upgrades, transmission swap, and possibly a V8 engine swap. Until I am ready for that...until I have the time, space, and money for that type of modification, I will be making due with what I have. Making due means minor upgrades to these items. For the engine, that includes adding extra horsepower and performance.

Last year I ran a three-day trip that spanned four trails in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Before the third trail, everyone gassed up at a station on the highway...except me. I was sure I had enough gas, without a doubt. By the time we reached the trailhead of the fourth trail I was nervous, and there was no gas for many miles. Being that it was a nice August weekend, I counted on meeting someone along this last trail with a gerry can full of gas I could buy.

Vehicle security should be a concern for all of us. Whether you drive a rusty, beat up old rock buggy, or a brand new TJ like me, chances are you own something that someone out there is willing to take. What got me thinking about security is that my roommates stock 1997 4Runner was broken into on Christmas Day while he was parked at the mall watching a movie. The thief broke a small window, reached in, and unlocked the rear door. Besides the usual stereo equipment, Kevins cell phone, new Christmas presents, and daily planner were missing.

Reviewer's Notebook: Tomken Machine Stubby Bumper and Winch Plate
November 1, 2005

You can't deny that when you see another Jeep coming toward you on the road, you always get a quick first impression by the front clip-bumper? winch? winch mount? tow hooks? shackles? The more of these items that are present, the more you can be sure that the Jeep is built up for real trail action!

Tech Notebook: REGEARING AND INSTALLING ARB AIR LOCKERS
November 1, 2005

For over a year and a half now, I have been building this project with protection, suspension, convenience features, and a few tricks.  It has come a long way, and continued to provide great daily fun, as well as off-road capability.

Flowmaster "Delta Flow" Series Mufflers
November 1, 2005

In the great quest for higher performance in this beloved sport of ours, it is rare to find an industry leader with a foothold that spans decades. Sure I could name a few, but I doubt many have as much history, recognition, and praise as Flowmaster.

UPGRADING YOUR ELECTRICAL SYSTEM TOSUPPORT HIGH-AMPERAGE ACCESSORIES
November 1, 2005

Last month I discussed the internal workings of your vehicles electrical system, showed you the alternator and batteries I upgraded with, and talked about the winch and lighting I installed that instigated this set of upgrades. Now that I have upgraded the main electrical components, its time to discuss wiring and other associated subjects.

I took many wheeling trips in 1998. In October, basically the end of the off-road season, we were camping and set out to find firewood for the next few nights. Well, needless to say, after a full summer, firewood is scarce. On popular trails, dead wood is almost impossible to find.
