The Farmington, NM area is renowned for its hard core slick rock four wheeling, and the place that gets most of the publicity is Chokecherry Canyon, known to locals as the Glade, home to many rock crawling competitions over the years. But, outside the town of Aztec is an area known mostly to the local wheeling crowd called the Rock Garden. Located approximately 12 miles outside Aztec off of Navajo Dam Road, the area on the east side of the road includes the aforementioned Rock Garden, Spider Canyon, and the Secret Trail.

The New Mexico 4 Wheelers, Rock Garden 4 Wheelers, and Cliffhangers Four Wheel Drive Club hosted the United Four Wheel Drive Associations (UFWDA) 25th Anniversary Convention in conjunction with the Southwest Four Wheel Drive Associations (SWFWDA) Summer Quarterly.

June 2001 -- The Rock Garden Four Wheelers of Farmington, NM launched its 3rd annual rock crawling competition on May 19 and 20 at the Rock Garden near Aztec, NM. The slickrock competition was held BLM land, 12 miles outside of Aztec on the way to Navajo Lake.
