XJ Armor Rocker Shields

Nov 1, 2005

One of the most popular types of armor for your XJ are rocker guards. These guards generally run along the bottom of the body between the front and rear tires and protect against rocks, trees and other nasty debris fighting to dent your XJ. Over the past few years I have inspected many different styles and types of rocker protectors. However none are quite as stout and heavy as XJ Armor's Rocker Shields!

PROJECT X

Nov 1, 2005

We want to keep with the "Jeep" tradition with this one. Jeep prides itself with its Cherokee and Grand Cherokee line because of the simple yet refined ruggedness. It is the type of vehicle that you can take from the opera to the backcountry, and it fits in WELL in both scenarios. This is also the goal for Project X. We dont want to detract much from the Jeeps (conservative, appealing) image in our buildup. Hopefully the end result will be one heck of a built up Jeep thats very UN-noticeable. We will start with the obligatory lift of a conservative 3.5". We will continue by protecting the underside of the Cherokee with skid plating, adding tow points front and rear, including a Reese Shadow mount hitch for its unobtrusiveness and better departure angle. Hopefully we will be reviewing some winch mounts for the front, the plan is to incorporate a hidden winch behind the stock bumper or an aftermarket bumper. Next is to upgrade the 4.0L engine with some performance modifications, including but not limited to exhaust and intake upgrades. I feel that with these moderate upgrades this Cherokee will be a mild looking off-road contender!

1998 Jeep Cherokee - Lifting Project X
Nov 1, 2005

Well... I got the lift (Explorer Pro-Comp ... but it ends up being much more) and inspected some parts... Instructions say that it is a 3" front and 2.5" rear lift... Since the Cherokee seemed to be sitting level as it came.. I was concerned that it would sit tail low.... and it did. :-)

Heckethorn/Rough Country 3" lift

Nov 1, 2005

So, you say you want to lift that Cherokee? Don't have a ton of cash to spend? Not really planning on entering the Rock Crawling championships of the world? Still need some air under that frame? Want to fit larger tires?

Six States CV Joint Driveshaft

Nov 1, 2005

As you may have read, Project X received a CV style driveshaft soon after the lift installation. I called and talked to Rubicon Express and they recommended their slip yoke eliminator kit and CV style driveshaft. After receiving and installing the Slip-Yoke eliminator and CV driveshaft I still had some vibration problems. One of the suspect parts was the CV shaft that Currie Enterprises supplied to Rubicon and which Rubicon Express sold to me. I was VERY unimpressed with the quality and packaging, and therefore suspected the driveshaft to be part of the problem.

Project X: The First Trail Ride

Nov 1, 2005

A local club VTA (Valley Trail Riders) hosted an event for some members of the Rustbelt 4-wheelers and United 4 Wheel Drive Association from Ohio.ý They said they were going to run some easy trails, so I decided to take the XJ along instead of the CJ just for kicks.ý I got down there on Saturday morning and decided to pull the swaybar off since there was a neat little hill to play on to test out the suspension. In one shot I got the right rear tire about 30" in the air!ý It turned out to be a good thing that I did this, since the suspension needed a little working to get loosened up.

Rusty's 3" TJ Lift Kit

Nov 1, 2005

Finally decided it was time to lift that Jeep? Or maybe you just got your Jeep and decided it needed to be a little bit taller? Quite possibly you decided that you wanted to start driving more difficult off-road trails. Well, there are a lot of reasons that people lift their Jeeps, and Rusty's Off-Road has just given us another. Basically this kit is what most people are looking for: an inexpensive lift kit of 3" that works off-pavement and rides great on road.
