The Jeep Rubicon 4.0 liter engine could use better breathing habits - adding more horsepower and torque. I wanted a simple bolt-on system that I could perform myself in my garage, so I turned to Daniel at Volant Performance for my engine aspiration needs. Volant Performance has a three part modular system that can be done in stages or all at once.
THE INSTALLATON The skill level required for installing the Volant system ranges from easy (with the cold air intake) to moderate (with the snorkel and exhaust). As you will see, the intake and snorkel I did myself, but I decided to have a local muffler shop do the exhaust. The dismantling of the stock exhaust and skid plates underneath was out of my league; plus, I didn’t want to risk having fume leaks. Installing the exhaust was much easier. Volant's new Jeep snorkel allows your 2000-06 Jeep Wrangler to easily wade through the deepest water without sucking it into your engine. Volant's Jeep snorkel is a three-piece air intake duct, made from durable x-link polyethylene that connects through the front fender and into Volant's Cold Air Intake system for the 4.0 liter Jeep engine. The snorkel uses a polished aluminum front cover that not only looks great, but also prevents debris from entering into the scoop. The snorkel extends just above the vehicle’s roofline. First, let's start by disassembling the stock air intake system. Make sure you undo the brace bar above the air box. Take out the stock air filter and loosen the O-rings. Disconnect the breather hose from intake tube and move aside. Inside the stock air box, undo the factory bolts and then remove box and intake tube. Install throttle body gaskets and O-rings. Bolt in Volant air box, and connect Volant intake tube to throttle body gasket. Slide air cone in box and connect to intake tube with supplied gaskets and o-rings. Secure Volant plate cover and reconnect the center breather tube. Now onto the snorkel. If you have a Rubicon model, you will need to remove the factory rocker panel skid. The install requires using a template to flush with body lines. Cut the template along the dotted lines, line it up with seam of the front/passenger side fender and flush with the bottom line. Take your time here - you’re about to cut a big hole in your Jeep. Check and double check! Then, center punch a ”bull’s eye” for the proper drilling alignment. Remove the template and drill your pilot holes. Using your 3-inch Hole Saw, drill your hole. Use high speed and slow pressure to keep your saw from wandering or hopping. Install the black bracket to the A-pillar of the passenger side. Take the “U” portion and install the supplied gasket for both ends. Feed the “U" portion of the snorkel up through engine bay by weaving it up. Connect the upper tube/gasket to the inside neck of the Volant intake box. Close the front breather hose of the intake box with rubber cap and o-ring. Take the outer “J” portion of the snorkel and feed into hole making sure the fender neck slides into the prepped gasket inside. The upper neck can now connect to the A-pillar bracket. I would now tighten the gasket o-rings inside of the fender and inside of the 3-inch hole connection. Also, try to have the o-ring screw heads facing you to promote a comfortable tightening situation. Last but not least, connect snorkel head and o-ring and tighten. Remove the blue protective film on polished face plates of snorkel and air box. RESULTS It sounds throaty and it looks sharp too!
