The days of a shattered windshield and a wad of cash out the window are gone. We picked up a Percy's Performance, Inc. SpeedGlass Racing Windshield and put it through the ORC Test of Torture.
We had one numbskull head but it like an enraged Billy Goat, shot a few rounds of ammo at it as if we were in the daily grind of LA road rage, hurled rocks at it as if we were fending-off thugs in the Rodney King Riots or a roost from Robby Gordon's Trophy Truck and then wiped it transparently clean to find little more than a small bullet hole to its good honor. The average windshield would have spun a web and shattered into pieces. Not the Percy. We even went so far to set it on fire. After using it as a drip pan beneath an oil spewing Jeep for a few months, we picked it up off the ground tossed some lighter fluid on it and lit it up. Granted, we didn't let the thing roast longer then a semi-charred marshmallow would, but it withstood the abuse. In our testing, we've confirmed that the SpeedGlass Racing Windshield is a perfect application for rock crawlers, desert racers, prerunners and urban assault vehicles alike. Any rig that sees merciless abuse should consider installing the SpeedGlass Racing Windshield. Benefits:
ORC's Test of Torture shadowed Percy's Performance's general claims such as "SpeedGlass a no-brainer for Road Race and Street/Strip cars alike!," but one claim that it didn't shadow is Percy's reason for choosing its polycarbonate SpeedGlass over that of Lexan. It's tougher. SpeedGlass was originally introduced for the Circle Track, Road and Drag Racing circuits and gained its fame by withstanding the rigors 200-plus MPH bugs, car parts and road debris. So, it was only natural to introduce the polycarbonate into a totally different and more rigorous environment, off-road. Currently, Percy's Performance has an assortment of applications, which includes just about everything, giving its ability to manufacture custom molds for prerunners, race, and chase vehicles. In addition, Percy's has an extensive line of off-the-shelf and ready-for-delivery line of shatterproof protection. While there are the numerous applications for streetcars such as the Mustang and Camaro, we'll concentrate on the Jeep-specific line, which are as follows:
After finally installing the windshield in our '86 CJ, we took it out for a simple BitD prerun, where it just so happened to take an impact. Coming around a tight corner in a rocky sand wash, I glanced up in the mirror to see a monstrous Trophy Truck-looking prerunner of Kyle Taylor and "Shotgun" Smokey tight on my tail. Rather than get the nerf that'll end all nerfs, I yanked the wheel hard to the right, pitching it sideways at a steady 35 MPH. Glory hallelujah! We were having a great time. When Smokey gave us the wave, they had to be doing a good 60. Right when he cut around the next corner, the massive BFG Baja TA KR's let loose of a few marble-sized rocks. Of note here were the hits we took to the windshield. No problem. Tossing rocks and other debris at the SpeedGlass is like shooting Superman. It's unscathed.
