CLEANING YOUR THROTTLE BODY

Source: Jeep at Off-Road.com
by: Terry Craig The 4.0 Jeep engines seem to run forever without any kind of maintenance besides the regular oil and filter service. But there are some things that need to be done regularly, one of them is the cleaning of your throttle body. If you ever have your engine idle high, or even race as high as two or three thousand rpm's you probably need to service your throttle body. Start off by making sure you have a can of carb or throttle body cleaner a T-30 and T-25 torx sockets or torx drivers and a regular slotted screw driver. A couple of other things that you should pick up while at the parts store is an air filter (since it'll be easy to change during this operation) and a bottle of fuel injector cleaner for the gas tank. Don't let the torx driver's scare you off this is a very simple task.

Begin by opening and securing your hood. Take your regular screw driver and snap off trhe clips that hold down the top of your air filter box. Then with your T-30 torx, remove the three torx screws that hold the intake boot to your throttle body. If you are not sure you can remember where the vacuum lines will be returned to, mark and number them with masking tape. Now remove the top of the air box, along with the intake boot and the attached vacuum lines. Next take the T-25 torx and remove the two screws that hold the idle speed stepper motor (see attached picture) then unplug the wires that go to the stepper motor and remove it. Simply take your can of throttle body cleaner and spray off all the black soot on the stepper motor. Then take the rest of the cleaner and spray down your throttle body making sure you clean the hole that the stepper motor came out of and both sides of the throttle plate, you don't need to use the whole can, just get it clean and that enough. Go ahead and reverse the procedure remembering to replace your air filter and the placement of the vacuum lines.

If your engine still races or revs up when its not supposed to, your idle stepper motor might be bad and or the throttle position sensor (its right next to the idle stepper motor) might be out of adjustment or bad too. Both of these two items are fairly expensive, so if cleaning your throttle body doesn't fix your problem I would take your rig to the local dealer and have them check it out, it might save you a headache and some money in the long run.

I have cleaned the throttle body and replaced both the throttle position sensor and the idle speed stepper motor but the engine still revs very high. I get a code: high voltage to the throttle sensor, any suggestions?

Hi I am having throttle body problems and really need some assistance. We hav ereplaced the TPS, IAC, deep cleaned the throttle body so it sparkles, used fuel injector cleaner at least every tank or other tank have used fuel injector cleaner. Have taken to shop oh 4 times now and have had several different answers from all. The computer is still showing P0121 and P0123, have been told it was the computer and we have also replaced this with a used one from wrecking yard. At times it runs like normal and then in last couple of days the idle is fluctuating again and even while driving down road it is doing it without stepping down on throttle. IT is baffling everyone. I have probably spent close to $1000.00 now trying to figure out what to do next, could it be the MAP? Plesae let me know what you think. Marian
