Jeep Engine: AMC 150 I4

Source: Jeep at Off-Road.com

The 2.5L inline 4 (I4) engine used in Jeeps today was first introduced in '84 when Jeep was owned by AMC. Originally, the engine used a carburetor, later versions used throttle body fuel injection, and the current version uses multi-port fuel injection. The fuel induction has been the major change with this engine over the years. The 2.5L uses over head valves with hydraulic lifters and a cast iron block and cylinder head.

The current version of the 2.5L I4 engine uses multi-port fuel injection. This engine is the standard engine used in the Wrangler (TJ) and Cherokee (XJ). It was the standard engine in the Wrangler (YJ) since 1991. The XJ version of the 2.5L has a slightly higher output.

i have an 89 2.5 jeep motor i would like to do away with the T.B. fuel injection. due to the age of my jeep's wiring system and the fact i use it in a lot of water. i don't rock climb so running and strange angles won't cause a carbed motor to run bad. can someone please direct me towards a way to carb my motor. a few locals tell me you can't do it. any rock crawlers out there want a fi system mine works great help me out and you can have it. tks Bobby

I have purchased a 89 wrangler with the 2.5... they changed it to a 2bbl carb with an adapter to the TBI intake manifold... I purchased a rochester monojet and a 84 intake manifold the jeep runs fine but under load it retards or someting and runs like shit... the distributor wires are not connected there are three of them. I also purchased an 84 distibutor but they look the same as what I got... The wiring has been all chopped up have isolater block, coil.. tried direct same result. Is this possibly a weak or intermittent spark? Timing is bouncing around... is the computer some how still connected to the motor? Does the module in the ditributor now need power or a controller? troubled in paradise slow goes it... Aloha
